2011 EAA Vintage Chapter 27 Pancake Breakfast

The final Pancake Breakfast for the season was held September 17th, and like all that preceded it, was well attended, even though not as big a crowd as past events,
possibly due to threatening skies and cold temperatures.

The Chapter would like to thank all of those who attended this past season's events, and helped us in our successful attempt to bring good times and aviation fellowship
to our members and those of the aviation community at large.

We look forward to seeing you again next spring when our "Third Saturday" events will begin anew!

AUGUST 20TH PANCAKE BREAKFAST PHOTOS

The weather couldn't have been better, and we were joined by several members of EAA Chapter 402, based in Newark Ohio.
Not only did we share fine aviation fellowship with 402 members, we were also treated to a variety of interesting aircraft.
This was this the best-attended fly-in traffic wise, but  was also exceptionally well attended by those driving in.
We even spotted an older Corvette and a Model A Ford pickup truck in the parking lot! (Photos below)
Thanks to all who helped us make this a great event by attending and helping support Vintage Aircraft Chapter 27!!

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU SEPTEMBER 17TH FOR OUR FINAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST OF THE SEASON, 8 TO 10 A.M.

JULY 16TH PANCAKE BREAKFAST PHOTOS
Lots of visitors, many fly-ins, and lots of great aviation fellowship!

New driveway & parking area cover, thanks for the help, Joe B!!! (aka Mr. Tailgate)

Great reason to visit Grimes Field!

Roger Brown and I went to Urbana for lunch today, expecting little more than a nice flight and a good meal. Down the ramp quite a distance, we spotted a Pitcairn Autogyro, not exactly what you'd expect to find at a rural county airport!

As we stood there gawking at the beautifully restored Pitcairn, the giant hangar door behind us slid open and there stood Chris Patton, Director of the new Champaign Aviation Museum. He welcomed us inside, and what an eye opener that was! Upon entering you can't miss the obvious "pieces parts" of a B-17, in this case "Champaign Lady", currently under restoration by the museum. That's Chris standing in front of the fuselage section.

The main display floor of the museum is packed with great examples of aviation history.
Along with other items, there's a B-25, a C-47, an A-26 Invader and a T-6/SNJ-4.

Several other items are tucked in here and there. We were also invited inside the C-47 which was a treat for sure!

This is a very worthwhile trip- admission to the museum is free, you can make a donation if you'd like, but there's certainly no pressure to do so.
These folks (almost all volunteers) are to be congratulated for what they've done, not only for the community, but also in the interest of aviation history as well.

You can contact the museum at 937-652-4710. They are open M-F from 9A to 4P, and Saturday 9A to 2P. Closed Sundays.

Our thanks to Chris Patton for allowing us to inspect and photograph the museum.

B-17 Logbook from WWII

Woody McIntire has sent us a pdf file of a WWII B-17 logbook. The aircraft was stationed in England and the log contains the real life mission experiences of the plane and crew.  Click here to read it.  Thanks, Woody.

Photos from Love's Landing, courtesy of Janie McIntire. She writes: Woody and I went to the annual fly-in yesterday at Love's Landing, an airpark not far from The Villages. Here are some of the pictures I took. The probably had 75 -100 aircraft.

Tour of the Maule Factory in Moultrie, GA

On their way south to FL, Woody & Janie McIntire visited Maule Air, Inc, home of the famous STOL aircraft of the same name.

Janie writes: Woody and I stopped to tour the Maule factory in Moultrie, GA on our way down to The Villages, FL. The guy with Woody is Ray Maule, the son of the founder. The Maule all covered with junk sitting in a corner without wings, is the first one flown by the founder, D.B. The engine pics are the diesel engine they are using. The plane behind the sea plane is the light sport they are working on, with a Rotax engine. The water shot is for sea  plane use. Ray told us if you ordered an airplane it would take 8 weeks to build. For additional information on the Maule aircraft, click HERE.

Our thanks to W&J for the photos!

August 15th Fly In Breakfast Breaks All Records! Nobody was counting, but the crowd that attended the next-to-last event of the season was about all our stalwart kitchen team could handle. Several aircraft we've never seen before showed up, and the fly-in traffic was nothing short of inspiring. Notable arrivals were Gary Bell's great old stake bed truck and a striking original T-Craft. This, even though the first half of the morning a good bit of DLZ's runway was under a stubborn, heavy blanket of ground fog. Our chapter thanks all those who attended and joined in the aviation fellowship.

Joining us was a group from EAA Chapter 402 in Newark.  Carl Oblinger set up the shot in front of the Ercoupe- Thanks Carl!
Photos thanks to Dave Morris:

July 18th Pancake Breakfast draws an unexpectedly large crowd. Even with threatening weather for the third consecutive event, the turnout was still far better than hoped for, with several fly-in visitors. The kitchen crew could hardy take a break, as wave after wave of new arrivals showed up. Last photo on the right in this group shows Janie McIntire dishing up our new menu item, sausage gravy biscuit. Hey, you can't live forever!! Don't miss next month's event which is  August 15th, 8AM to 10AM.

We were treated to a "show & tell" of Joe Dryer's beautifully polished Globe Swift. Several important updates are obvious, including the sliding canopy, the instrument panel and the switch from "steering wheels" to stick controls. This 180 hp hotrod is not only a great performer, but also fun to fly. When shopping for a new plane, Joe had quite a list of requirements, and this eye-catching Swift has 'em all! The last photo below shows a frequent view: Joe looking back at himself in the mirror finish, while polishing away!

We enjoyed another nice turnout for our Pancake Breakfast, even without great weather on June 20th. These events are the perfect venue for old aviation friends to link up and trade experiences, and that's what it's all about!

May 16th Fly In Pancake Breakfast!

The weather could have been better, but that didn't slow things down much for our first Pancake Breakfast on May 16th. We're hoping for better weather and a bigger crowd on our next event, June 20th. This photo courtesy of Charles Johnson.

Here's a video of the 1998 Fly-In at Delaware.
One of our greatest EAA events ever.
This segment was originally produced to air in the TV show "Agri-Country".

PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Our chapter exists to make aviation fellowship available to pilots, owners, and the general public. One example of this effort is our recently completed shelter and dining facility located on the east end of the flight line. This dedicated building contains a kitchen where we prepare and serve breakfasts the third Saturday of each month during the Spring, Summer and Fall.
These events are usually very well attended and offer an excellent opportunity (excuse) for pilots from Central Ohio to join up and renew friendships and get a great breakfast of eggs, sausage, pancakes and beverage. Seconds? You bet!

FLY-IN/DRIVE IN EVENTS

Our flagship event is the semi-annual Aviation Heritage Days, which is by any measure, HUGE. Our membership turns out in full force, along with other volunteers and personnel from the City. It's not unusual to attract crowds in the thousands for the two-day events.
We always have a big turnout of military aircraft, antiques, homebuilts, ultralights and new production aircraft as well. Working in partnership with the City of Delaware, this event is always a worthwhile effort and provides a big boost to general aviation in our community.

AVIATION FELLOWSHIP
Saturday mornings are our "unofficial" meetings. The coffee pot's always on, and like as not someone will have brought donuts. Our main objective is to enjoy the fellowship of not only our membership, but also anyone else who wanders in. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. If you fly in, there's no landing fee, plus there's a fuel discount all weekend long.
This photo demonstrates the tie between our group and our host, the City of Delaware. Here, our chapter volunteers have just installed the new wind "T" (which they also built), near the sock.
